The 5th EP release by Paper Trees, The Birdwatcher was recorded between February and April of 2019. The Birdwatcher is more raw and acoustic than its predecessors, House on the Bluff and Sunrise in Hanoi. Layers of lush synths are replaced with guitars and mandolins. 808s and other electronic percussion are replaced with cajon, tambourines, sticks, and shakers.

Most important, this EP includes recordings made by James M. King, the birdwatcher, found after he passed away from a 6-month battle with lung cancer. Bird chirps introduce and end many of the songs, culminating into a duet between father and son on the title track.
